ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO 5
Module Coordinator : Dr. Nora
Tutor : Ar. Alice
The module focuses on "place-making" in dense urban environments, emphasizing an urban-responsive design approach. Students engage in studio exercises exploring the concept of "place-making" and architecture that responds to urban needs. The design process involves developing architectural narratives and expressions to enrich the present and future context. The final outcome aims for an architectural design responsive to both tangible and intangible aspects of its urban character, maximizing the potential of urban space.
Project 1a: Preliminary studies – Townscape Appraisal
The first project, Preliminary Studies, involves a preparatory task focused on understanding the character of a town or city for place-making through the 'Townscape Assessment' exercise. The goal is to evaluate the identity and uniqueness of an urban area to identify opportunities for responsive architectural design within the given context. The project introduces students to urban design fundamentals by assessing the visual and aesthetic qualities of the proposed site. Townscape Appraisal involves evaluating historical and urban morphology, urban structure, responsive environment, physical evaluation, place, content, landscape character, behavioral survey, and SWOT analysis. The assessment covers both macro and micro scales of the area, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the site for their semester's work.
Project 1B & 1C
Students will design a Community Centre in Brickfield, considering urban context and user behaviors identified in Preliminary Studies. The design should address structural, spatial, functional, and environmental requirements, incorporating legislative considerations, lighting, acoustic design, and coherent façade detailing. The outcome should integrate construction and theory within the Studio and align with the Module on Building Services.

Reflection
In AD5, firstly I definitely opened my eyes to urban theories, urban designs, the study of the street, how people live, how they behave and many more. I never know Architecture should be learnt out of the building itself, and instead, it should be learned from the way of people's behavior and lifestyle. This is our first time doing a five story building and I was struggling for a bit at first while thinking about the concept but thankfully everything turned out quite well after reading the social dimension and other books, those books are interesting and heled a lot. I also learned a lot about the blind people in Brickfields since I was incahrged of the behavioral in P1A, I get to interview this blind unlce while doing site visit, he told me a lot about his daily life, his work, how he became to work as a massagist, and most importantly the history of our site. The parking lot (our site) and the food court (Peter’s pork noodle) used to be a factory for the blind ppl to learn how to produce or make cane furniture but then ppl not buying the cane furniture anymore so they demolished it and then became a parking lot and food court. As for P2 which is most challenging for me, I would say I pushed myself to learn a lot of new functions in the softwares such as Revit, Illustrator and Enscape these which I already knew how to use, I had fun during the learning process as I gained a lot in return. In short I learned a lot form my friends, turors and lecturers, hope all of those will help me grow in the future.
